THOSE WERE THE DAYS
13th October 1962
F A Amateur Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Willesden 1 Hampton 2 (Dowling, Groves)
Hampton ;-
Joe Andrews; Brian Eastman, Roger Blackmore, Peter Jennings, Peter Bennett, Don Bevan, Jakie Cooper, Brian Hearne, Joe Dowling, Johnny Webster, Billy Groves.
Hampton extended their run in the F A Amateur Cup with a solid win at Willesden despite being short of Ivor Griffin and Ron Griffin. After a quiet start Hampton Reserve’s inside left Webster got the first effort in, narrowly wide of the post. Dowling harried a defender into almost conceding an own goal and then went close to scoring, himself. Wingate’s wing-half, Bristow, seemed to be causing Hampton the most trouble and kept Bennett on his toes. Just after half-time, Hampton’s offside trap misfired and Andrews had to race off his line, hurling himself at the feet of their centre-forward to make a great save. Hampton’s superiority then led to two goals, Groves put over a perfect cross which was anticipated by Dowling who ran in and headed the opening goal. The second arrived soon after, Blackmore broke up an attack, found Webster who found Dowling on the right flank. Dowling crossed and Groves headed in from a narrow angle, beating the home keeper, all ends up. A late penalty awarded to Willesden, was converted, but too little, too late for Willesden.
