THOSE WERE THE DAYS
20th May 1969
Spartan League Cup Final (@ Egham Town FC)
Staines Town 3 (Cooley, Walsh, Carroll) Hampton 2 (Wellham, King)
Staines Town;-
Peter Archer; George Talbot, Alan Cox, Dicky Watmore, Bruce Butler, John Tizzard, Micky Walsh, Jim Cooley, J King, Neville Warner. Tony Carroll.
Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Dave Johnson, Keith Hanna, Graham Belcher, Peter Dove, Arthur Rowlands, Micky Roach, Peter Allen (Dave King), Brian Myers, Keith Wellham.
In front of a four-figure crowd, Hampton lost their proud record of never having lost a Spartan League Cup match (four trophies in four seasons). It must have been galling to have lost to rivals Staines, who, apparently, should have won more easily than they did on the day. Jim Cooley was the star for Staines, whilst Earl was Hampton’s best player. Warner went close for Staines in the first minute, but, in the 15th minute, Cooley struck, his low drive beating an unsighted Andrews. On the half-hour, Wellham beat Staines’s off-side trap and was able to beat Archer in a one-on-one, 1-1. Right at the end of the first half, Walsh restored Staines’s lead. In the second half Myers had an effort that, teasingly, bounced along the top of the cross-bar. In the 71st minute Staines scored their third, Cooley crossed from the right, over the leaping Andrews, leaving Carroll with an easy, stooping, header. In injury time Hampton scored their second, an effort from Dave King, on for Allen, which deflected in off Watmore. Staines had won their first ever League Cup.

Thanks for the previous match reviews over the season Les much appreciated.
This last one showed how many players in the lineups played for both Staines and Hampton.

Just noted that this game was only 3 days after the Hounslow game, the players must have been dead tired.
