THOSE WERE THE DAYS
12th August 2014
Isthmian (Ryman) League Premier Division

Hampton welcomed back their former player, Stuart Lake, who had recently departed the club and joined Wingate & Finchley as player/coach. By the end of the game, Hampton would probably have wished Stuart had joined someone else, after suffering a 4-1 reverse. The Beavers were always playing catch-up, going behind in the 15th minute when Ola Sogabanmu side-footed, Karl Olivide’s pass. A few minutes later Harris won a penalty, Moone stepped up to take it, Bobby Smith initially saved the spot kick but couldn’t prevent Moone’s follow-up. Both teams were looking for goals, Smith saved efforts by Harris, Mooen and Wanadio. Carter saved from a David Knight effort before Steer got in a vital block. The second half – think, wheels fell off. Scott Shulton scored from a pull-back; David Knight hit a curling shot past Carter; Knight then scored his second when he ghosted in between two defenders. During this period Hampton twice saw goal-bound efforts kicked off the line by covering defenders! Stuart Lake came on for the last minute or so, making a cameo appearance, Wingate didn’t even need the services of Niko Muir to hand Hampton a bit of a spanking.

Funny but I have no memory whatsoever of a keeper called Wayne Carter. Plus did we really have Derek Bryan as late as 2014? I'd be surprised if that were the case. Surely his career had been long over by then?

Not suprised you don't remember Wayne Carter, he only played 3 times at the start of the season. Followed by Tyler Tobin, Jack Norton, Ronnie Worster, Mark Smith & Seb Brown. Regarding Derek Bryan......brain fog (or the fifth amendment)...seeing Bryan on the team list, though Derek, not Michael who also only had a brief stay at the start of the season. 2013/14 was very much like that, players hardly having time to get their boots off before they wer out the door!

Ah that clarifies it Les, thanks! I know Derek came back for a very brief unsuccessful spell, some time after Brentford had let him go after failing to adequately recover from the awful injury he had whilst with them (which was actually sustained in the act of scoring a goal) but I did think it was much earlier than 2014.
Further to Wayne Carter, he is currently manager of Harrow Borough.Lord Elpus wrote: Tue Aug 12, 2025 3:20 pm Ah that clarifies it Les, thanks!
