Hampton’s biggest crowd of the season to date was swelled by an invasion of Welsh fans expecting to see a Welsh victory over the English. From Newport’s perspective the game did not go as planned and it was Hampton’s own Welshman who set the Beavers on the path to victory! Hampton were without Maskell, missing due to a suspension. A very even contest ensued – even if the visiting supporters were outshouting the home fans – but there was only one real chance for either side in the first half. The second half got off to the best possible start when Hampton’s own Welsh lad, Flitter, got onto the end of an O’Connor corner to put the Beavers ahead. Newport’s best chance came with an indirect free kick in the box (when MacKenzie got into a tangle with a couple of Newport forwards) but eventually Scott Walker’s shot ended up in the trees. With two minutes to go Deegan used his pace to break down the left, his cross was taken in stride by Ibe who slotted the ball past Pat Mountain, the Newport keeper. Hampton had won their way into the last 32, drawn away to Hereford United, before losing 4-1.
