This match was the third between the clubs during the season. Each one seemed to have an extra edge. A 3-3 away draw was followed by a 5-1 thrashing of Eastleigh at Beveree with three players sent off and three penalties scored. On this occasion, Hampton, a man short won the contest with a superlative strike in the last minute of normal time. Hampton led with a goal on the half-hour. One second, they were defending a free-kick, the next Ashe was threading a through ball for Allen to run onto, a quick shimmy, a drop of the shoulder and he fired the ball between Eastleigh keeper Lee Webber’s legs. With five minutes to go and still leading, Ashe attempted to shrug a defender off his back, contact was made and he was sent off. With two minutes to go Tyrone Bowers scrambled home the equaliser. Extra time loomed. No one expected quite what happened next. Fernandes ran on to a loose ball some 35 yards out and struck a first time shot that soared into the top corner. Cue a mobbing of Fernandes, followed by the final whistle. A heck of a goal to win a game.
