Chelmsford
Lost 3-1, but don’t think we played too badly. Conceded just before the break in a half of few chances, they came out second half the better and doubled their lead. Fernandez hit the post right before we made it 2-1 where we then gave it a go and pushed for an equaliser, the golden chance coming from Vaz in injury time who hit the post, before Chelmsford sealed it on the counter minutes later.

I know we all see things differently but I thought we were really poor today. Perhaps I was expecting too much after the win at Hemel but frankly we didn't compete until given a lifeline from another fortunate goal, a heavy deflection on Frimpong's shot looping the ball over the sub keeper's head. Not a single shot in the first half and our first attempt didn't arrive until the 53rd minute, off target from Gardner. The game seemed to follow the pattern versus Hornchurch, over-powered in midfield and slow in attack. We conceded just before half time having given the ball away in midfield, then a second early in the second half failing to clear our lines.New boy Frimpong was probably our best player and Vaz showed some energy but otherwise there was little to get excited about. Lots of interruptions to play, niggly fouls and a few yellows for both sides. Fernandez's header did hit the inside of the post from a corner and late on Vaz's header nearly brought an equaliser when he hit the base of the post but we failed to exercise the keeper for most of the game. Those chances make it sound closer than it really was and Chelmsford got a late third as we pushed forward in the 99th minute. No last minute heroics today.Only consolation was that most of the bottom sides also lost apart from Chippenham who made it a second win in two games.

Chelmsford are yet another of those horrible sides to watch...lots of hoofball, lots of "injury" prompted tactical/team discussions and constant totally unrealistic claims for free kicks. That said, they are also a pretty strong side with some good players and probably deserved their win.
It's fairly clear that Kiernan creates so much for us, and we really missed his spark after his early exit. We just don't really create enough chances.

I’m with Tony on this one. I think we got bullied. I think we put in a decent shift but I think we need a better plan against sides who press really well. What we did most of the time was panic and go long. Maybe a back three wasn’t a good idea today, got outnumbered in central midfield.

we were not great but definitely better than Chelmsford.Tony wrote: Sat Feb 14, 2026 5:37 pm I know we all see things differently but I thought we were really poor today. Don’t see the need for a 5 at the back now we have King and Fernandez. Would like to see us try 4 at the back once Field is fully fit again and maybe pack out the midfield with bodies.
I always prefer a flat back four. What was very noticeable particularly in the first half was a real lack of width. When playing out from the back we had no wide outlet ball and subsequently turned back inside and were dispossessed a number of times. I am not sure about the keeper at all. Looks rooted to his line on crosses. Kicking rather erratic.

Thought Dowse was a bit harsh on the performance, but also very honest that he made mistakes, including not having a proper training session on Thursday.Tony wrote: Sat Feb 14, 2026 9:21 pm Dowse’s post match interview very honest that we weren’t good enough today. Needs to shake things up a bit for the trip to Totton.
Highlights from us and Chelmsford now - Pretty amazing that Vaz hitting the post in the 94th minute doesn't make it into our highlights package!
(Chelmsford decided to include it in theirs though so we can see how close it was to another Beavertime equaliser)
