THOSE WERE THE DAYS
15th April 1989

Isthmian (Vauxhall-Opel) League; Division 1

Hampton 1 (Cheshire, 60’) Wembley 0 Att; 159

Hampton;-
David Hook; Clive Marich, Gary Cambridge, Steve Kuhne, Tim Hollands, Dave Rattue, Nigel Hatcher, Steve Cheshire, Ricky Walkes, Malcolm Dickenson, Sean O’Connell,
Unused Subs; Dean Griffin, Danny Aluko.

Seven days earlier Hampton had lost 3-0 at Chesham United and were looking like a team sleepwalking towards relegation. Then followed, on the Wednesday evening, a gritty 1-0 win over Met Police that hinted at a glimmer of a reprieve. Now comes a vital game at home to Wembley. On the Saturday it was midfielder Cheshire who came to the rescue with a rare goal. In the early running Kuhne and Dickenson both went close. Wembley’s keeper Jeff Fanner tipped a Walkes effort over the bar. In the second half Fanner denied Kuhne again. The only goal of the game came on the hour mark. A long throw by Rattue was back- headed across the face of the goal by Walkes to Kuhne, his shot was blocked but the ball ran to Cheshire’ who drove the ball home, finding a gap between Fanner and a defender on the line (the way that pundits talk, you would think that the long throw had only just been invented!). Hampton would only gain one more point (from the last game at Uxbridge), but it was enough to keep the Beavers up for another season.
