THOSE WERE THE DAYS

19th August 2017

National (Vanarama) League; South

Braintree Town 2 (Allen, 45’, Crook, 53’ pen) HRBFC 1 (Wassmer, 90+5’) Att; 472

HRBFC;-
Sam Howes; Nathan Collier, Josh Casey, Jack Cook. Charlie Wassmer, Christian Jolly, Brendan Kiernan (Kyle Spence, 73’), Shaun McAuley (Harry Crawford, 55’), Ryan Moss (Duncan Culley, 62’), Max Kretzschmar, Taurean Roberts.
Unused Subs; Billy Bishop (Gk), Michael Kamara.

The first half saw the Beavers very involved in the match, Jolley, Roberts and Moss all had chances to open the scoring. Even Wassmer was getting forward regularly and getting headers in on target. Right on half time, Hampton went behind. Billy Crook snaffled the ball in midfield, his cross into the box was met by Luke Allen, netting past Howes. Not much time passed in the second half before Braintree scored a second. One second Braintree were defending, then a quick counter-attack, was brought to a halt when McAuley brought down Allen for a penalty. Crook took the penalty, leaving Hampton with a hard job to get back in the game. It got worse when, in the 66th minute, Cook pulls back Dernell Wynter, is adjudged to be last man, and is sent off. Despite the advantage, Braintree were unable to breach the three-man defence. As added time was running out, Nathan McDonald missed a catch and Wassmer managed to get his head to the ball. At the end of the season the two sides would meet again, this time at Beveree, in the Play-Off Final. Braintree won that, on penalties, after a 1-1 draw.
