THOSE WERE THE DAYS
September 24th 1966
F A Amateur Cup; Preliminary Round
Hampton 1 Wembley 1
Wintle (p)

Hampton;
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Graham Belcher, Don Aldridge, Roger Blackmore, Brian Morris, Lance Wintle, Graham Rowley, Ken Merry, Syd Carter, Dave Timberlake.

Wembley’s keeper, Dennis Wells, was the star of the game, making save after save, to keep Wembley in the F A Amateur Cup. Wise was only beaten once when Wintle scored a penalty in the 13th minute, given for a harsh handball against Court. Wembley responded by sending a number of crosses which put Hampton under pressure. One of those lobs produced a goal in the 39th minute, Lavers nodding the ball in, just under the crossbar. Wells prevented Hampton scoring a late winner when he saved from recently signed Carter.

The replay on the following Saturday went the way of Wembley, 2-1 (No floodlights!).
