When Hampton scored a goal in the sixth minute it looked as if the league leaders would pass serenely into the next round of the London Senior Cup, Wembley had other ideas and before half-time had taken a winning lead. Hampton took advantage of a defensive error, Ellison being slow to move when Mowle headed the ball back to him. Wintle pounced on the ball and ran through to score past the helpless Russell. Four minutes before the interval John Lavin made progress down the left, his ball inside to Pell was helped on to Fred Pudney who cracked the ball via a defender. Two minutes later Lavin outwitted Earl, his pass found Pudney who slotted in his second goal. The two quick reverses just before half-time seemed to take the stuffing out of Hampton. The match was turned on its head and Wembley held on comfortably to the win.
