Hampton’s first half performance was perfect as they built up a 2-0 lead. Hampton’s Manager, Steve Cordery, just wished that his players could perform like that regularly for the whole ninety minutes – never satisfied are they, managers! It was very much one-way traffic in the first half. O’Connor and Girvan both had shots that had to be turned away for corners. Even Manuella almost got into the scoring act with a dipping volley. The opener eventually came from Marsh, a Gavin Rose through ball saw Maidenhead keeper, Barnard coming for the ball but Marsh raced in from nowhere to get the vital touch. On the stroke of half-time Maskell scored his 20th goal of the season, Barnard only able to deflect Maskell’s effort into the goal via an upright. The visitors came back into the game in the second half, Paul Scott scoring in the 54th minute. A number of Maidenhead’s players would migrate to the Beavers with Alan Devonshire a few years down the line.
