THOSE WERE THE DAYS
15th August 1970
Spartan League
Vauxhall Motors 1 (Bonner 60’) Hampton 3 (Myers 49’, Dollimore (og) 53’, Roach 60’)
Vauxhall Motors;-
D Peck; M Hughes, B Swain, M Brazier, I Sharp, B Dollimore, R Cruikshank, S Saville, D Clark, H Ottoway, C Bonner.
Sub; R Tuffs
Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Keith Hanna, Ray Monk, Dave Johnson, Hugh Lindsay, John Peasgood, Micky Roach, Brian Myers, Peter Farren, Arthur Rowlands.
Sub; Dave Blackmore
Hampton got off to an impressive start defending their status as league champions. All the more impressive when Hampton’s record at the Park Street, Luton ground was only one win in six visits. In the opening fifteen minutes Farren, Myers, Peasgood and Rowlands all went close, keeping the home keeper, Peck, very busy. Vauxhall probed forward twice, but failed to find the target. Half-time surprisingly came with no score. Everything changed in the second half. Myers intercepted a Dollimore back-pass, and lobbed Peck in the 49th minute. In the 53rd minute the unfortunate Dollimore deflected Peasgood’s shot past his own keeper. Vauxhall had some fortune of their own to pull a goal back in the 60th minute. A mix-up between Hanna and Andrews, allowed Bonner to chase a through ball and stroke it into an empty net. Hampton responded immediately to re-instate a two-goal lead. A strong run down the right by Roach, was capped by a low drive through a crowded area.
1970/71 was Hampton’s last season in the Spartan League, finishing third. The top four clubs; Hoddesdon Town, Staines Town, Hampton and Addlestone were all promoted to Athenian League Division 2 for the 1971/72 season.
I am reasonably sure that Luton Town’s Training facility is built on Vauxhall Motors old ground, or, if not, very close.
