THOSE WERE THE DAYS
18th August 2004
Isthmian (Ryman) League Premier Division
Eastleigh 3 (Sales, 20’, 62’; Thomas, 80’pen) HRBFC 3 (Currie, 3’, Fontana, 11’, Lewington,54’) Att; 262
HRBFC;-
Kieran Drake; Graham Harper, Dean Wells, Craig Lewington, Jamie Jarvis, Marcello Fernandes, Michael Gorman, Michael Currie (Lee O’Learie, 65’), Luke Fontana (Adrian Allen, 76’), Dudley Gardner (Orlando Jeffrey, 56’), Andy Morley.
Unused Sub; Abby Nsubuga.
A memorable first visit to Eastleigh for the Beavers, sharing six goals, and also for the weather which went from balmy skies to a torrential downpour of monsoon proportions for the last fifteen minutes. Gorman came in for injured Alan Inns, whilst Fernandes started in defence as Jeffrey was held up by traffic. Two goals in the first eleven minutes put Hampton in a good place. A through ball was clipped over the giant (6 foot 12) Eastleigh keeper, Colin Matthews, and an overhead kick by Currie settled matters. The second goal came following a corner, Currie fired goalwards but it was Fontana who got the decisive touch with a header. Eastleigh pulled a goal back with a Paul Sales looping header in the 20th minute. Early in the second half, Drake made three important saves before Hampton restored their two-goal advantage. Lewington scored direct from a corner, his swerving cross deceiving Matthews, who was caught standing on the six-yard line. With rain threatening Sales scored his second, clipping the ball over Drake. Then Jarvis was sent off for his second booking (his first dismissal for almost 12 months). Eastleigh sensed a way back into the game with Hampton having to re-organise. With ten minutes to go and rain pelting down, Hampton conceded a penalty which was put away by Martin Thomas.
