THOSE WERE THE DAYS
24th August 1968

Spartan League

Hampton 5 (Garrett 8’ 16’, Merry 18’, Allen 35’, Timberlake 75’) Hoddesdon Town 0

Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Brian Smith, Dave Johnson, Peter Minor, Ken Merry, Peter Garrett, Julian Goodlace, Peter Allen, Brian Myers, Dave Timberlake.
Sub; Graham Belcher.

Hoddesdon Town;-
Prior; A Stevens, T Hoare, N Miller, Redman, Godfrey, D Baker (I Johnson, 46’), Jenkins, Brewster, Lock, J Ashdon.

Garrett scored two goals in the first sixteen minutes, and when Merry added a third goal, two minutes later, the match was over as a contest. Garrett’s first came from a cross by Allen, Garrett’s second, a volley, from Timberlake lob, whilst Merry’s was a good old-fashioned blast from 35 yards. Hampton’s fourth came ten minutes before the end of the half, Allen lashing the ball past Prior, the visiting keeper. The second half saw Hampton drop down a gear and a more even contest ensued. Eventually a fifth goal did come, with fifteen minutes left. Myers crossed in from the right, Prior, challenged by Allen, palmed the ball onto the bar, which left a simple tap-in for Timberlake. Right at the death Hoddesdon had their first real chance of a goal but Andrews, alert to the end, denied both efforts by Godfrey and Brewster.

Hampton finished the season in 4th place, nine points behind the champions, Vauxhall Motors (2 points for a win, back then).
