THOSE WERE THE DAYS
2nd September 1995

Hampton opened their league campaign against newly promoted, Canvey Island, who in the previous few seasons had made a name for themselves in the F A Vase competition. Hampton had already played two cup matches (League Cup and F A Cup) and won them both so were probably quite confident of a positive outcome. First off, the visitors needed to get to Beveree, however, traffic delays on the M25 led them to arrive with just a few minutes to spare. Unfortunately for the supporters, a rather drab goalless draw was what they got for their patience. Russell was called upon twice in the early stages to make a couple of saves. Hampton’s first and only shot came in the 74th minute, Calvert who had replaced Brown, saw Canvey’s keeper Mickey Desborough off his line and tried a speculative shot which flashed inches wide. It was left to Russell to deny Alan Brett late on to keep a point – which at least got Hampton up and running.

During the season, Tony Coombe (First Team Coach), was named as substitute 28 times, without being used - during his stay at the club he was selected 46 times, and never came on, some record!
