THOSE WERE THE DAYS
11th February 1984
Isthmian (Servowarm) League; Division 1
Hampton 4 (Heselden 2, S Russell, G Russell) Hertford Town 0
Hampton;-
John Loizides; Richard Smith, Sean O’Connell, Steve Rogers, Steve Smith, Perry Tunesi, Steve Russell, Brian Lake, Mick Heselden, Glen Russell, Tim Hollands.
Sub; Peter Munt
Hertford Town;-
Derek Townshend; Simon Wilson, Alex Green, Peter Shadbolt, Paul Janaway, Martin Sperrin, Len Merrifield, David Cooper, Mark Lincoln, Nick O’Donoghue (Micky Dale), Eddie Scales.
Two goals in the last ten minutes settled this match in Hampton’s favour. Hertford made the early running, Mark Lincoln going close from Simon Wilson’s cross in the first minute - presumably Hampton’s heads were still in the dressing room. Heselden gave Hampton the lead on the half-hour, a corner on the left was flicked on by Glen Russell to give the striker a chance to score with a low shot at the far post. Hampton had the ball in the net a little later but Holland’s effort was chalked off for a foul. Derek Townshend denied Steve Russell from scoring with a long shot, bringing off a flying save. In the 53rd minute Steve Russell was at it again, this time his 30-yard effort dipped over Townshend for Hampton’s second goal. Hampton broke quickly from a Hertford corner and another long-range effort beat Townshend, this time though, it was from Glen Russell (his first for the club). A few minutes later, Heselden headed his second goal of the afternoon to complete a fine win that moved Hampton up to third in the table.
