THOSE WERE THE DAYS
17th February 1996

Isthmian (ICIS) League; Division 2

Cheshunt 0 Hampton 3 (Bayliss 25’ 33’, Cheshire 63’) Att; 45

Cheshunt;-
Trevor Lake; Tommy Stephens (Lee Fulling), Micky Rogan, Darren Woodhurst (Stuart Bailey), Bruce Reid, Micky Leslie, Ryan Harris, Corbould, Paul Pescod, Matt Barlow (Kevin Hoddy), Danny Wilson.

Hampton;-
Mark Russell; Warren Drew, Kevin Duffell, Jim Wigmore, Steve Cheshire, Dave Rattue, Robin Lewis, Mark Wilson, Warren Bayliss, Peter Wood (Jon Reilly), Phil George (Scott Lacey).
Unused Sub; Tony Coombe.

The weather was cold and there had been some snow around, despite the wintry conditions this was Hampton’s fourth game in eight days – the previous three games had resulted in two defeats and one win. The pitch was hard and bumpy and the Beavers, coping with the conditions, put in a workmanlike performance. Nine points had gone missing in the previous six matches so three points were vital to keep contact with the promotion pack. Bayliss was apparently having problems with his footwear but he still managed to score two goals before half-time. Bayliss’s first came when he seized on a half-hit headed clearance, the second when he burst through the middle giving Trevor Lake no chance. Lewis and Cheshire dominated the midfield in the second half and it was no real surprise when Cheshire scored, penalising Lake’s mistake in dropping a cross from Duffell. Russell pulled off a magnificent save as Cheshunt pushed forward. Bayliss could have had a hat-trick, twice going close. Lacey, on his debut, once firing just wide and then denied by Lake.
