THOSE WERE THE DAYS
26th February 1972
Athenian League; Division 2
Hampton 4 (Moody (og) 16’ Farren 36’ Earle 44’ Sillett 89’) Rainham Town 2 (Moody, pen, Philips)
Hampton;-
Ron Whiteaker; Alan Earl, Dave Blackmore, Ken Reed, Steve Markham, Ian Wenlock, Peter Farren, Micky Roach, Johnny Eales, Simon Johnson, Jeff Sillett.
Hampton 2-0 up were coasting when a resurgent Rainham scored twice in nine minutes, forcing Hampton to buck up their ideas to win the game. Hampton took the lead in the 16th minute when Johnson won the ball in midfield to send Roach clear down the right, his cross was deflected into the net by Moody for an own goal. In the 36th minute a dipping 25 yard shot by Farren deceived Rainham’s keeper, Joe O’Sullivan put Hampton, allegedly, in control of the game. Rainham responded with two goals in a nine-minute spell, Moody, with a penalty – to make up for his own goal – and then J Phillips. There was still time before the interval for Earl who was ideally placed to follow up Sillett’s free-kick that came back of the cross-bar to restore Hampton’s lead. After the goal rush of the first half the second period was a much quieter affair. With only a minute to go Sillett ensured a Hampton win when he scored in the 89th minute with a free-kick that eluded everybody.
