Hampton & Richmond Borough Under 18s 2-1 Bracknell Town Under 18s
Monday, 16th March 2026, 19:45 Kick-off
Isthmian Youth League, West Division
Bedfont Sports Club
Pre-Match/Build-up
Tommy Rance picked me up outside my place in Whitton at 19:10, along with Casey Jones, and off we headed straight to Bedfont for another Isthmian Youth League, West Division fixture! Arriving at the club around 19:30 we were greeted by Hampton’s first team manager Alan Dowson, and Tom Garcia. As usual it was free admission with the clubhouse at Bedfont Sports open for business. No hot food available, just bar snacks and hot drinks.
First Half
The visitors wore sky blue tops with vertical black stripes on the front, black shorts and black socks; their goalkeeper, Jake Jeffery, wore a fluorescent green top with black shorts and black socks. Hampton sported their usual red shirts, red shorts and navy socks; with Lucius Russel in goal wearing all-fluorescent green. In the technical area for the Beavers tonight were Johnny Doherty, Adam Smith, Martyn Hyde and Kieran Jackson (no Steve Bates). Hampton lined up with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with a defensive line of Stan Smith (left), Zak Kubinskyy (left centre), George Starr (right centre) and Seve Cushing (right); in front of them were Tom Maddigan and Archie McKenna; with an attacking midfield trio of Tim Salaghishvili (left), Joel Doherty (centre) and Devan Ghedia (right); Tyler Andrew-Flower led the front line. It was a drab first half with Hampton offering little going forward, but nevertheless going in at the break a goal to the good.
Bracknell Town kicked off proceedings and shot towards the western end of the ground, while Hampton kicked towards the Orchard/Bedfont FC end. It was a high intensity start with Bracknell passing the ball around confidently in Hampton’s half. Stan Smith managed to create Hampton’s first half chance of the night after good play by Tim Salaghishvili on the left, Smith crossed the ball in but it was dealt with by Bracknell’s Loui Draper. George Starr showed good composure when under pressure by two Bracknell forwards, managing to clear the ball away towards the halfway line. Starr was busy again moments later as a dangerous ball was played in towards Bracknell’s Noah Martin, but Starr got there first. Rohinesh Sandhu, Bracknell’s muscular central midfielder, played a good ball out wide to Owen Tye, following his pass and yelling “come again, come again”, receiving the ball back from Tye, he sprinted towards the penalty area but Tim Salaghishvili tracked back and dispossessed him before he could unleash his shot. A free kick in a central position was taken by Rohinesh Sandhu in the 15th minute, but he blasted it just high of the goal. After around 20 minutes a free kick was awarded to Hampton following a high foot on Seve Cushing by Bracknell’s Owen Tye (I thought the referee was reaching for a yellow card, but in the end it was just a talking to).
In the 22nd minute the first proper chance of the evening arrived, Tom Maddigan slid the ball through to Tim Salaghishvili who managed to get good power on his shot, forcing the keeper to parry it away. Zak Kubinskyy headed just wide from the resulting corner. At the other end Bracknell’s Evan West took a snap shot from range in the 27th minute, but it didn’t really threaten Lucius Russel’s goal. Hampton had a great opportunity in the 35th minute when Joel Doherty played a great flick on towards the charging Tyler Andrew-Flower, but the ball just clipped him from behind and he was unable to take it with him, he’d have been through on the goalkeeper had he connected properly. Lucius Russel was called out of his box to head the ball away from Bracknell’s Noah Martin. Hampton took the lead in the 41st minute through Tyler Andrew-Flower, who slotted it into the bottom left corner after a through ball from Joel Doherty – this came directly from Hampton defending a Bracknell attack, such was the erratic nature of this first half.
Second Half
It was the goal-scorer Tyler Andrew-Flower who kicked us off for the second half. Tim Salaghishvili had the first opportunity, curling an effort just wide in the 48th minute. Kai Cooper replaced Devan Ghedia in the 54th minute, before Stan Smith took a free kick from the halfway line, which sailed all the way through to Jake Jeffery in the Bracknell goal. There was a good move for Hampton in the 56th minute when Kai Cooper held the ball up well, allowing Stan Smith to run outside him on the left, receiving the ball and travelling into the penalty area, whipping a dangerous ball in which sadly nobody was there to connect with. Bracknell equalised in the 57th minute, a great half volley from Rohinesh Sandhu, into the bottom right corner of Lucius Russel’s goal.
Hampton sought to freshen things up after the goal and striker Judah Ogbaji replaced Tyler Andrew-Flower up front. Ogbaji took the restart kick for Hampton. In the 61st minute Archie McKenna won a free kick after picking up a loose ball in the middle of the park and running forward. Joel Doherty took the free kick and found McKenna who headed it towards goal, forcing a fingertip save from Jake Jeffery. Another good chance for Hampton went begging when Joel Doherty received the ball at the far post, at a very acute angle to goal the skipper tried to poke towards goal with his preferred right foot when it may have been easier to cross back in with his left. “Left foot Joel, have a bit more confidence in yourself!” cried one of our coaches. The Beavers struck the crossbar in the 68th minute, Kai Cooper won the ball in the middle of the park, played it right to Seve Cushing who whipped it in, Joel Doherty’s head connected with it and keeper Jake Jeffery tipped it onto the crossbar. Judah Ogbaji blasted the follow-up shot in but it was cleared.
There was a break in play around the 70th minute as Archie McKenna received some treatment after going down injured, unfortunately he was unable to continue and was replaced by Jack Potter. This necessitated a tactical change for Hampton, as Seve Cushing pushed further up field with Kai Cooper dropping to defensive midfield and Jack Potter going to Cushing’s right back position. Casey Jones conducted a headcount of the crowd and came up with the figure of 38 (not including the substituted Tyler Andrew-Flower, who was wondering around the ground amongst the crowd!). High drama in the 78th minute as a penalty was awarded to Hampton after Bracknell’s Oli Newall was red carded for bringing down Judah Ogbaji, who had snuck in behind him. Tim Salaghishvili scored the penalty, confidently shooting into the top left corner to give Hampton the lead and keep our title hopes alive. To the keeper’s credit, he did appear to get his hands to the shot. The penalty was awarded in the 78th minute, the red card issued after some deliberation in the 79th minute, and the penalty kick actually taken in the 80th minute. “There’s no VEO tonight mate!” came a joke from the Hampton bench as Salaghishvili celebrated nearby.
After a few nervy moments, Hampton managed to cling on for all three points, setting up two huge matches against Northwood next week. Northwood sit top of the table, one point ahead of Hampton but with two games in hand on us. The two sides are yet to face each other in the league but Northwood will visit us next Monday, 23rd March for our home fixture, at Bedfont Sports FC. Then next Thursday, 26th March, Northwood again visit Bedfont Sports for the final of the Middlesex Senior Youth Cup. The lads would really appreciate your support in the cup final as we try to get some silverware into the trophy cabinet.
