THOSE WERE THE DAYS
4th March 1967

Spartan League

Staines Town 1 (Warner, pen, 83’) Hampton 1 (Carter 18’)

Staines Town;-
Westgarth; Lynskey, Perkins, Watmore, Lane, Millard, Doe, Ashton, Neville Warner, Hanson, Britnell.

Hampton;-
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Roger Blackmore, Don Aldridge, Graham Belcher, Brian Morris, Syd Carter, Mickey Gorman, Ken Merry, Lance Wintle, Alan Tovey.

A distinctly below-par performance from Hampton in sharing a 1-1 draw at local rivals Staines. Star of the show for the home side was Hampton’s ex-player, Nevile Warner who would make a telling contribution late in the contest (Aldridge and Tovey were both former Swans). Hampton were missing Graham Rowley’s pace up front whilst Aldridge struggled against his former team. Despite this, Hampton scored early on, when Carter converted a pass from Morris in the 18th minute. Warner was running the game for Staines and Hampton seemed unable to contain him. Hampton had a couple of chances during the second half but fell foul of the offside trap too often. With seven minutes left, the inevitable happened, Staines equalised. Hampton conceded a penalty when Garman was adjudged to have fouled Hansen, Warner – who else – struck the penalty past Andrews.
Hampton still took the number one spot at the end of the season, Staines finished 12th out of 17.
