THOSE WERE THE DAYS
13th March 2007
Isthmian (Ryman) League; Premier Division
HRBFC 1 (Paris,26’) Horsham 1 (Rook, 63’) Att; 290
HRBFC;-
Matt Lovett; Graham Harper, Ryan Lake, Matt Elverson, Rob Paris, Dean Wells, Stuart Lake, Lawrence Yaku (Elliot Godfrey, 65’), Ian Hodges, Barrie Matthews, Francis Quarm (Glenn Harris, 75’).
Unused Subs; Matt Nash (Gk), Dudley Gardner, Victor Asombang.
Horsham;-
Gareth Williams; Tom Graves, Nigel Brake, Eddie French, Kevin Hemsley, Jacob Mingle, Lee Carney, John Westcott, Kevin Cooper (Lewis Taylor, 75’), Carl Rook, Matt Geard.
Unused Subs; Stuart Myall, Dean Wright, Jamie Baxter.
Ninety minutes of football played at top speed, as both teams went at each other ended in a 1-1 draw at Beveree on a Tuesday night. Fast and furious, but it was only when the players slowed the game down that the goals came. Lovett made a clutch save from Kevin Cooper as early as the 4th minute. Quarm shot wide after Yaku had played the midfielder into a good position. Hampton took the lead when the two Lakes combined to set up Paris who headed in Stuart Lake’s flick at the back post. Chances came thick and fast, Gareth Williams, the visiting keeper (playing his first league game in six months) had to come out quickly to punch the ball away from Hodges and then had to backtrack to defend a Matthews shot. In the second half, Kevin Hemsley mis-hit a shot allowing Lovett to gather safely. After a coming together Matt Geard and Elverson were both booked, at times it looked as if the match was going to boil over. As it was there were a number of cautions for players of both sides, but somehow there were no red cards. Horsham’s equaliser came just after the hour mark, a patient build-up was finished by a tap in by Carl Rook. With five minutes to go Godfrey steaming goalwards, collided with the onrushing Horsham ‘keeper, the ball was cleared by a defender just before it crossed the line, Referee Jaye ruled out a penalty, declaring the contact was accidental. Breathe!
