People often say that there is never a ‘Copper’ around when you need one. In Hampton’s case, on this Bank Holiday Monday, when they lost 3-2 at home to Hayes & Yeading United, that story came partly true. Two days earlier, the Beavers had gained a rare victory at Braintree Town but then, had to change the line-up for the Monday afternoon game, as centre-back Orlando Jeffrey had to don his blue Met Police kit to carry out his duties at the Notting Hill Carnival. Hampton got off to a good start when Scarborough got onto the end of a Cooke free-kick in the 18th minute. Visiting keeper Delroy Preddie had seemed reluctant to challenge Scarborough for the ball and it became apparent shortly after that he had a problem when he was replaced by Aaron Howe. It looked to have got worse for Hayes as there then followed an eight-minute delay when Danny Allen-Page and Matt Ruby clashed heads. Allen-Page was substituted, Ruby carrying in with a bandaged head. Two minutes later Ram Marwa turned in an equaliser at the far post. Hayes seemed buoyed up by the turn of events and went ahead in the 66th minute when Josh Scott put away a penalty. In the 80th minute Marwa scored his second, and the visitor’s third. Within the blink of an eye, Wright had brought the score back to 2-3.
