THOSE WERE THE DAYS
31st August 1991

Hampton FC;-
David Hook; Chris O’Neill, Simon Edwards, Leo Cook, Chris Holding, Tim Hollands, Micky Beadle (Paul Reed, 81’), Steve Bates, Gary Jenkins, Gary Ewing, Jason Fenton.
Unused Sub; Martin Heath
Haywards Heath Town FC (programmed line-up, so may not be accurate);-
Lee De La Rue Browne; Adrian Rowe, Andy King, John Bates, Robert Norris, David Fleet, Terry Duke, Steven Naylor, Timothy Hall, Graeme Hatt, Richard Hatt.
Subs; Mark Brooks/Jeff Cooper, Tony Rowland/Simon Hall.
NB; The team had two sets of brothers – and how about the keeper’s name!
The 1991/92 season was only two weeks old and to date, with just one win, at home, to Feltham & Hounslow Borough. Hampton were taking part in the Preliminary Round of the F A Cup. In the past, the Football Association organised the early rounds into a ‘group stage’, it meant that clubs had an idea whom they might meet before you played the opening game. So, the Beavers already knew that if they beat Haywards Heath, then they would have another trip into deepest Sussex.
Beadle came into the team for his first start of the season and was probably the difference between the two side. Beadle was the son of Manager Tony Beadle (formerly a successful Reserve Team Manager), and, at times, could turn a game on its head with his pace and wide play. Each side had few decent chances in the first half and it was 0-0 at the interval. Beadle started to prosper down the right side as the second half went on. The opening goal came in the 58th minute. Jenkins set Beadle away and the winger’s shot from the corner of the penalty area beat the visiting keeper, Browne. Hampton had a momentary flutter when a shot by Adrian Rowe went close. Ewing had two chances which were dealt with by Browne. The tiring Beadle was replaced by Reed in the 81st minute. In the 86th minute Ewing latched onto a pass by Edwards and shimmied past Browne and walked the ball into an empty net. With time running out Reed scored his first goal for the club with a neat shot inside the near post.
Hampton would go on to beat Lancing and Littlehampton Town (both 3-1) before going out to Tonbridge after a draw, an abandoned replay - followed by another replay.
Paul Reed 1991/92 to 1993/94 & 1998/99, 68 apps 16 subs, 18 goals – Paul’s claim to fame….he scored Hampton’s 1,000th goal in the Isthmian League at Epsom & Ewell, later that season, on 16th November.
