A dogged performance by Epsom & Ewell who included several with Hampton connections, including manager Barry Barnes. The visitors made Hampton have to work hard for their 2-1 win. The Beavers had got off to an excellent start taking a lead in the 4th minute. O’Connor sent in a free-kick from 25 yards that came back off the crossbar, Jarvis smashed the bouncing ball towards the goal but Epsom’s keeper Dave Hyatt beat the ball out, but only as far as Morley who lashed the ball past the prostrate keeper. Ex-Hampton youngster Simon Hatton was denied twice by Hampton defenders, however in the 30th minute Epsom equalised. A long free-kick from the left was met by Leon Raishbrook and the ball deflected into Hampton’s net. During the second half Epsom did well to keep the score level but eventually they conceded in the 65th minute. Allen, keeping just the right side of the Epsom defence, ran on to a through ball, Hyatt dived, got his hand to the ball but couldn’t prevent the ball flying into the net. A couple of minutes from time, Blake, due to take a free-kick, appealed that Richard Ingham was too close. Referee, Mr O’Keefe booked Blake for time wasting. Blake took the free-kick as instructed, whereupon the referee promptly blew his whistle and booked the Epsom player for encroachment. You couldn’t make it up!
