Hampton (Isthmian Division 2, South) were hosting Hailsham Town (Sussex County League Division 1) and were probably over confident of progressing to the next round of the F A Cup. Someone should have paid attention to Hailsham’s previous season’s exploits when it had taken Dulwich Hamlet to halt their run in the 3rd Qualifying Round. On the day, it was the visitors from Sussex who looked in better form. It didn’t help when Hailsham were gifted a goal fifteen minutes into the contest. Joyner received the ball in midfield but then attempted a back pass to Hook, however, the misplaced pass went straight to Danny Whyman. Hailsham’s striker ran on to the ball striking it past the onrushing Hook – Whyman had scored five goals on his debut so knew where the goal was. Hailsham then worked hard in midfield to keep Hampton’s forwards at bay and were not averse to clearing their lines with a long clearance, Graham Bannatyne, Hailsham’s keeper had very little to do. Hampton’s 1990/91 season never really got going and they eventually finished in a disappointing 12th place.
