THOSE WERE THE DAYS
9th February 1988
Isthmian League Cup (AC Delco) Quarter Final
Hampton 0 Yeovil Town 2 Att; 420

Hampton;-
Chris Vagg; Gary Cambridge (Gary Ewing, 81), Gary Gerson, Tim Hollands, Jim Wigmore, Horace Nelson, Mark Harmsworth, Sean O’Connell, Ricky Walkes, Sean Rice, Zak Shafique.

Yeovil Town;-
Bob Iles; Jeff Sherwood, Phil Ferns, Tony Ricketts, Steve Rutter, Ricky Chandler, Gary Donnellan, Andy Wallace, John McGinlay, Paul Randall (Paul Thorpe, 80), Gerry Pearson.

Hampton’s interest in the AC Delco Cup ended in front of their biggest crowd for four years. Despite all the effort, Hampton, were beaten by two second half goals from an accomplished Yeovil side. The Hampton team of 1988 had a serious problem in scoring goals, and this game was no different in that respect. Despite a string of corners and some fine saves from Iles, the Beavers were unable to break through. The Beveree pitch didn’t suit Yeovil’s passing game, so in midfield Shafique and O’Connell held the whip hand. The best chance of the first half fell to Paul Randall (the ex-Bristol Rovers striker), but his volley went over the crossbar. Nelson, for Hampton had a couple of efforts on target before and after the interval. Yeovil took the lead through John McGinlay, but only due to a mistimed effort that spun wickedly over Vagg. Wigmore had a shot cleared off the line before Ricky Chandler settled the game in Yeovil’s favour in the 75th minute.
