THOSE WERE THE DAYS
12th April 1989
Isthmian (Vauxhall-Opel) League Division 1
Hampton 1 (O’Connell) Met Police 0 Att; 174
David Hook; Clive Marich, Gary Cambridge, Steve Kuhne, Tim Holland, Dave Rattue, Paul Lucas, Steve Cheshire, Ricky Walkes, Malcolm Dickenson, Sean O’Connell,.
Unused Subs; Neville Hatcher, Daniel Aluko
Hampton gained three valuable points in their battle against relegation with a 1-0 win over Met Police on a Wednesday night at Beveree. The pitch held up well considering that on the previous night Kingstonian had beaten Croydon (Ks were ground sharing at Beveree). The Police could have taken the lead in the 11th minute when a Nick Matthew effort hit the bar. Kuhne then sliced a shot just wide from 20 yards. Hampton produced a period of pressure on the Police defence, winning three corners in succession, from the third their keeper, Donnelly, dropped the ball under pressure from Lucas but the ball was scrambled away. Four minutes before half time, Cheshire found O’Connell in space who coolly struck the ball past Donnelly. O’Connell almost added to his score early in the second half but his shot clipped the bar. Walkes almost converted a chance laid on by Kuhne, despite some late pressure by the visitors, Hampton hauled themselves out of the relegation spots.
