THOSE WERE THE DAYS
9th May 1968
Spartan League
Hampton 5 (Allen, Belcher, Carter, Timberlake, Merry (pen) Petters Sports 2

Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Peter Minor (Keith Hanna, 16’), Ken Merry, Graham Belcher, John McLintock, Syd Carter, Mickey Garman, Peter Allen, Julian Goodlace, Dave Timberlake.

In their 67th game of the season, Hampton took on Petters Sports on a Thursday night at Beveree (the visitors were reported to be folding at the end of the season). After fifteen minutes, Petters, took a shock lead through ex-Hampton’s Brian Fossick, with a 35 yard deflected free-kick. A minute later Minor and Fossick clashed heads, Minor having to go to hospital for treatment and he was replaced by Hanna. Shortly before half time Allen raced through to equalise. With an hour gone, Goodlace had a shot blocked and Belcher smashed in the rebound. Ten minutes later a shot by Timberlake hit Carter’s leg and diverted into the net, lucky for Carter but not for Petters. Fossick then scored his second to bring Petters within a goal, however, Hampton responded with late goals from Timberlake, and a Merry penalty, to make the game safe.
