THOSE WERE THE DAYS
17th August 2002
Isthmian League (Ryman) Premier Division
Sutton United 1 HRBFC 0 Att; 543
HRBFC ;-
Andy Iga; Dean Berry, Chris Rose, Gary McCracken, Aiden O’Brien, Billy Mead (Chris Payne 16’), David Cross, Ashley Sestanovich, Lee Riddell, Dean Thomas (Dave Cory 60’), Esayas Yhdego (Adam Pittwood, 72’).
Unused Subs; Chris Bouchez, Ben Ferris.
Ian McDonald’s first game in charge ended in a narrow defeat at Sutton United. The game was played on an extremely hot afternoon, Hampton starting with only two players from the previous season (O’Brien & Yhdego). Mead limped off early after a particularly ‘sturdy’ challenge. Sestanovich unleased a 30 yard shot which had Sutton’s keeper, Tom Dunn, leaping across his goal. On the half hour, Sutton scored the only goal of the game. Following a free-kick on the right, the ball was knocked in low and Mark Watson bundled the ball home. Hampton came close to equalising in the 54th minute when an O’Brien header, from a Yhdego corner, was tipped away by Dunn for another corner. Iga made a couple of snappy saves in the second half, whilst Yhego had a good shout for a penalty waived away. The sapping heat definitely affected both sides during the game.
McDonald only lasted 20 matches as Manager before being replaced with Hampton bottom of the division (where they ultimately finished).
