Torquay Utd

A good test for us to see how we match up with one of the stronger sides in the league albeit their recent form has not been great. Just one win in last five for Torquay including a 3-0 FA Cup humiliation at Bishops Cleeve. Under new ownership, their budget has been cut compared to previous seasons but is still twice the size of ours so their fans expectations is that they should be pushing for promotion. Ex-Beavers Sam Dreyer and Ben Seymour should be in their squad. Seymour has only one goal for them this season last time out v St Albans. Should be a close game, hopefully we can carry the momentum from the Enfield result into another win.

I listened to their manager’s interview, they have a few players out injured especially in central defence, but no doubt they have enough resources to cover. Expect both Dreyer and Seymour will be looking to get a good result .

Frustrating afternoon, for all the possession we had we never looked threatening, easy work for Torquay.

I thought we really missed Mike Atkinson today.

I think Odei is a great player, but he doesn't have the mobility that Mike has. And he was playing so deep that he was almost like a third centre-back. That meant Josh and Mauro got over-run in the centre of midfield.

I think Torquay played like a lot of good teams will play against us. Their midfield played high and didn't let us play out from the back without being challenged. And, like I said, I don't think it helped with Odei playing that deep.

And I thought there was a lack of support for the ball carrier today as well. If you're going to play the passing game, I think you need to create little overloads around the pitch, but we were just so spread out today.

Another headed goal against us. Grrrr.

Bit of a reality check after last week. Although neither side created many clear cut chances, Torquay were largely in control for much of the game as we found it hard to break the lines. Not sure we looked like scoring with their keeper untroubled. At times we were sloppy in possession as Torquay were quick to close us down. Their goal came from a freekick needlessly given away and an unchallenged header. Not outclassed by any means but need to create more chances. When we did get close we rather wasted the opportunity with a poor ball or wrong option.

Torquay are a very decent side, with real physical strength but we definitely weren't outclassed and showed enough to suggest we won't go down. However I would have put Wall on 15 mins before as it was fairly obvious we needed to scare them at the back a bit more.

When you look at their lineup with the experience at a higher level was obvious and physically stronger. We got out muscled and they knew how to run the game. Their goal came from losing possession and then fouling them A free header and 1-0 down. Very few chances and.neither keeper was unduly worried. They closed us down at the back and tried to put Curd under pressure.
Ex league clubs are always going to be like this and we need to adapt, and hope our young players can adapt. Atkinson was missed as has been noted already.
Onto St Albans, hopefully a better result

In his post match comments Alan Julian said that training has been disrupted. Anyone know what he is referring to there?

Doubt if the club will tell us! Hope this is not going to be a recurring problem.
