THOSE WERE THE DAYS
16th October 1971

F A Amateur Cup 2nd Qualifying Round

Hampton 2 (Firstbrook (og), Farren (p)) BAC Weybridge 3

Hampton ;-
Ron Whiteaker; Alan Earl, Peter Minor, Ken Reed, Steve Markham, Phil Sperling, Peter Farren, Micky Roach, Dave Proctor, Hugh Lindsay, Peter Allen.

2-0 up with ten minutes to go. Done deal, right! Ah, no, certainly not as Hampton conspired to lose after what appeared to be a dominating display. Hampton were ahead before the first minute had elapsed. Roach put Allen clear on the right and his shot was turned in by Firstbrook for an own goal. The remainder of the first half saw the BAC goalkeeper, Mason, in superb form denying Hampton a second goal. BAC’s top scorer, Carter, looked very useful but had little support. During the second half, Proctor shot over the bar from close range and Lindsay was denied by Mason. Hampton secured what appeared to be the win in the 70th minute, Farren was put clear by Allen, and after rounding two defenders was brought down for a penalty by Hill, Farren duly converted the penalty. BAC’s revival started with a deflected goal in the 80th minute. A shot by Paramour was going wide until it deflected off Wiltshire, wrongfooting Whiteaker. Five minutes later a corner had the home defence in a tangle and Wiltshire was on hand to level the scores at 2-2. With two minutes left the BAC comeback was complete when Paramour’s cross was headed in by Cox, leaving Hampton and their supporters, dumbfounded.

Playing the whole match with only ten men must have taken its toll in the last ten minutes.
