THOSE WERE THE DAYS
12th November 1966
Middlesex Senior Cup 1st Round
Wealdstone 1 Hampton 4 (Wintle 2, Carter, Allen) Att; 1500
Wealdstone;-
Brian Goymer; Mike Doyle, Dave Leonard, Charlie Townsend, C Wilkinson, Eddie Dillsworth, Bernie Bremer, Keith Searle, Bobby Chllds, Brian Allen, Ken Fulkes.
Hampton ;-
Joe Andrews; Roger Blackmore, Alan Earl, Don Aldridge, Graham Belcher, Brian Morris, Graham Rowley, Lance Wintle, Peter Allen, Ken Merry, Syd Carter.
Before the match on Saturday 12th November at Wealdstone, the local Salvation Army led the minute’s silence to commemorate the fallen of two World Wars. The two sides had met in the same round the previous season, Wealdstone winning 6-1, the ‘Stones had recently beaten Wycombe Wanderers and were confident of handing out another beating – perhaps, over confident. Hampton were missing Ron King and Dave Timberlake, both injured. Hampton were 3-0 up after 30 minutes on a rain-sodden pitch. In the 11th minute, errors in the home defence left Carter in space and he responded with a shot into the left-hand corner. Seven minutes later Wintle took advantage of more defensive frailty to score Hampton’s second. Allen headed in Rowley’s corner to make it 3-0 on the half hour. Ten minutes before half-time, Wealdstone pulled a goal back when Fulkes got to a Bremer cross. Wealdstone struggled to make any headway, at one stage, Townsend and Childs were seen arguing in midfield whilst the game went on around them. The final goal came after Goymer had rushed out and punched the ball away from the onrushing Allen. Wintle took the free-kick and with the help of a slight deflection it was 4-0. Hampton’s performance attracted praise from the Harrow Observer, and, even the Spartan League!
