THOSE WERE THE DAYS
6th December 1980

London Senior Cup Preliminary Round

Hampton 3 (Tunesi 2, Hill) Epsom & Ewell 2

Hampton ;-
Mark Pearson; Peter Bartlett, Dennis Pym, Alec MacFarlane, Tim Hollands, Mark Cobb, Brett Walker, Perry Tunesi, Steve Hill, Martin Pattison, John Reader.
Sub; Vic Watson

After 13 minutes, Reader won the ball, took the ball down the left side, the ball was chipped back to Tunesi who fired a glorious shot past their keeper, Finch. Ten minutes later a Hill cross was headed on by Cobb to Tunesi whose lobbed header went over the Epsom defence for number two. Epsom pulled a goal back through Tommy Tuite, but the two-goal lead was restored when Hill scrambled the ball home, 3-1. Then came an incident in which Epsom re-started the game whilst four Hampton players were still in the Epsom half. Delaney and Samoth made the most of this and Delaney scored , 3-2. Who was at fault? The referee for allowing the restart – or the Hampton players taking too long to get into position? The incident appeared to create some bad feeling and a few minutes later Epsom’s David Burke was carried off after a badly misjudged tackle by Walker – for which he was cautioned. The game never really got going in the second half and the game, as a contest, gradually fizzled out.
