What started as a bit of a non-event soon turned into a rip-roarer of a match on a slippery, though playable surface. Leyton defender Roy Edwards picked up a silly booking, two minutes into the match, delaying a free-kick would come back to haunt him. Hampton took the lead in the 21st minute when Moore fired in a free-kick that flew straight into the corner of the net, past keeper Ian Brooks. On the half-hour, Edwards received his second booking for a foul on Rattue and Leyton were down to ten men. Shortly after, Leyton equalised when Che Stadhart scored a penalty. Stadhart then scored again with Leyton playing much the better football. Hampton then hit back before half-time with two goals to take a 3-2 lead. Cheshire glanced a near-post header from a Moore corner, before Pratt scored with a far post header from yet another precise corner from Moore. In the 70th minute it was level again, at 3-3. Robbie Gammons’s shot taking a wicked deflection. It was left to Cheshire to make the game secure, when five minutes from time he thumped in Stairs’ s knockdown.
