THOSE WERE THE DAYS
17th January 1990
Middlesex Charity Cup Quarter-Final

Southgate Athletic 1 Hampton 3 (Cheshire, Rattue, Kuhne)

Hampton;-
David Hook; Mike Payne, Steve Cheshire, Mark Gill (Wayne Falloon), Mark Joyner, Dave Rattue, Mike Dalton, Paul Lucas, Steve Dalton. Matt Downs, Neville Hatcher.
Subs;- Billy Thistleton, Julian Burrows

Southgate Athletic;-
Paul Vines; Steve O’Neill, Declan O’Brien, Paul Letts, Mark Mennell, Eddy Jones, Paul Smith, Darren Woodhurst, Peter Fishenden, Barry Popperwell, John Potter.
Subs;- Mel Tierney, Keith Finucane, Darren Larner, Tony Kennedy, Andy Groom

Despite having dominated most of the first half against Southgate (played at Cheshunt’s ground), Hampton surprisingly found themselves a goal down in the 29th minute. Joyner attempted to head the ball back to Hook, but the attempt lacked power, allowing John Potter to intercept the ball and rifle a low shot past the stranded keeper. Minutes before half time it looked as if Peter Fishenden would add a second before Lucas performed miracles to turn the ball past the post. Hampton equalised in the 59th minute when Southgate’s keeper, Paul Vince, failed to hold on to a shot by Cheshire. Hook did well to hold on to a shot from Mark Mennell before Rattue fired in a free-kick to put Hampton ahead just before the hour mark. In the 69th minute, Falloon, on for the injured Gill, started a move deep in his own half, exchanging passes with Hatcher, which finally ended with Hatcher finding Kuhne at the far post who outjumped two defenders to score Hampton’s third.

Les, are you able to confirm if there were two players called Hatcher in the late eighties/early nineties, Neville and Nigel? Thanks.
