THOSE WERE THE DAYS
2nd May 1985

Isthmian (Servowarm) League Division 1

Hampton 5 (Walkes, S Smith, Tunesi, Marshall, Heselden) Bromley 1 (Howell)

Hampton;-
Chris Vagg; Robert Winterhalter, Malcolm Dickenson, Tim Hollands, Steve Smith (Ian Rae), Fred Wilson, Perry Tunesi, Mark Wilson, Mick Heselden, Ricky Walkes, Dwight Marshall.

Roger Charland’s last match in charge of Hampton ended with a 5-1 win over Bromley. The scale of the win didn’t seem likely with a 0-0 score at half-time. Bromley were stunned when Hampton scored two goals at the start of the second half. A dreadful back pass let Walkes in for an easy goal in the 47th minute, then a minute later Bromley’s keeper, Scott, dropped a cross at Steve Smith’s feet who accepted the chance with alacrity – a fitting end to his Hampton career. In the 58th minute, Bromley scored against the run of play, Chris Howell beat Vagg in a race to the ball and flicked it into the bottom corner. Hampton then scored three goals in the last ten minutes. Walkes set up Tunesi, who turned inside a defender to fire home. In the 85th minute, Marshall was in the right place to collect Wilson’s shot which Scott could only parry in Marshall’s direction. The fifth and final goal came three minutes from time, Heselden scoring against his old club, Dickenson the provider from a corner.
