THOSE WERE THE DAYS
28th July 1996

Pre-Season Friendly – Saft-Nife Shield Final

Hampton 0 Hayes 2 Att; 250

Hampton Squad;-
Mark Russell; Lyndon Buckwell, Steve Cheshire, Danny Collyer, Warren Drew, Kevin Duffell, Neil Fewings, Gerry Harvey, Tom Maloney, Barry Moore, Bradley Pratt, Dave Rattue, Craig Reilly, Nicky Ryder, Richard Sell, Darren Smith, Rory Todd, Jim Wigmore, Peter Wood, Paul Xiberras.

For four seasons, 1995/96 – 1998/99, Hampton organised a pre-season tournament, sponsored by Saft-Nife Limited. Who they? Saft-Nife were a subsidiary of a major French company whose factory, Castle Works, backed onto the ground. Their stock-in-trade was industrial batteries. No longer there, the site is now Castle Business Village. Played over a weekend, Hayes beat Staines Town, whilst Hampton beat Sutton United, on Saturday 27th - both after penalty shoot-outs. On the Sunday, Sutton beat Staines 2-0 in the 3rd/4th place match. In the final Hayes triumphed 2-0. Ross Pickett opened the scoring for Hayes in the 34th minute. Bradley Pratt forced Chris Firmy into a good save before Carl Bartley sealed the win with a late tap in.
