I’ve had a look back through our record and since the 2-2 draw at home to Dorking on 4th February 2025, we’ve played a total of 36 league games, with a total record of W6 D5 L25. The last 17 games of last season produced just two wins over sides that went on to be relegated. I acknowledge that we had a good start to this season with just one defeat in nine, however we have now gained just one point from the next 10. Without wishing to be unfair, Alan Julian’s total league record is: P65 W18 (27.7%) D13 L33 (50.1%)

By comparison, Mark Harper, who oversaw our relegation from NLS in 2012, had a win percentage of 33.7%, and a loss percentage of 38.8%. Albeit we were playing in the Isthmian Premier during 12-13.

I hear people constantly mention our “low budget,” however we have become an established NLS club, having spent 15 of the last 19 years in this division. I understand we can’t be expected to compete financially with a number of the other clubs in this league, however I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect us to be competitive with a lot of the clubs in this division. I’m very proud that we are an established member of NLS, and would not wish to see us drop down from this level.

Will be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

The club has been, essentially a step 2 club, aside from 2 x 4 year spells since the 1998/99 season.

This is under various chairman/owners and with some good and some.bad seasons. In that there has been some very good seasons and some very bad ones!

But we, definitely, should consider ourselves a Step 2 Club as for the majority of the past 28 years that has been where we have been competitive.

These are the managerial records for league games since 3 points came in for a win in 1973/74 (Roy Philpott's career was mostly during the 2 points for a win, he only had one season under the new system - 30 games 0.93 point average)

Mark Fewings; 80 matches; Ave points per game 1.73
Alan Dowson 167 ; 1.71
Alan Devonshire 340 ; 1.68
Chick Botley (1) 204 ; 1,67
Mel GwynnETT 69 ; 1.49
Steve Rogers 139 ; 1.45
Ted Murphy 202 ; 1.44
Roger Charland 191 ; 1.43

Paul Barry/Darren Powell 64 ; 1.3
Tony Beadle 23 ; 1.26
Steve Cordery 130 ; 1.25
Gary McCann 154 ; 1.14
Mark Harper 75 ; 1.11
Ron King 57 ; 1.09
Brian Laing 101 ; 1.09
Alan Julian 65 ; 1.05
Paul Reynolds 18 ; 0.89
Chick Botley (2) 20 ; 0.5
Ian McDonald 17 ; 0.47

Chick Botley managed twice

Average points gaind by the above; 1.42

Not sure if it adds anything to the debate, but it may be of interest!

All irrelevant now after Alan Julian's departure.

Presumably that's Mel Gwynn, brother of Nel?

That's a good analysis Josh. The only point I would make is that more and more money is being ploughed into the league in recent times and if a longstanding member club like ours cannot increase its playing budget in line with others it will only get more and more difficult to compete and historical league positions will be increasingly irrelevant. (I realise this isn't rocket science!).

Sad to see Jules go but it has seemed like boom or bust under his tenure. Last season we had steadily accumulated 45 points in the first 29 league matches. Over the remaining 17 games we only picked up 6 points from two wins so lost 15 of those games. This season a somewhat similar pattern with 16 points accumulated from the first 9 matches then just one point from the next 10.
