Hampton extended their unbeaten run to thirteen league games, moving up to fourth place in the table. The Beavers fielded two new signings, Nick Burton (Aldershot Town) and Ian Savage (Wokingham Town), both looked a more than useful addition to the team. Worthing proved to be a difficult side to beat, both keepers, Rusell and John Keeley were both brought into action, early on. Russell was quick off his line to thwart an early attack whilst Keeley tipped a Vines header over the bar. Hampton broke through in the 37th minute. Vines reacted quicker to a loose bouncing ball and sent a looping header over Keeley. Keeley blocked a shot by Moore as Hampton pushed forward for a second goal. Cheshire went close to getting on to the end of a Reilly free-kick. Worthing forced Hampton back into their own half for a long spell during the second period, but were mainly restricted to long range efforts. The all-important second goal came late when Moore ran from the hallway line to slot the ball cooly under Keeley.
Later that night, Alan Simpson & Ray Galton received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Comedy Writers Guild – needless to say, the 2-0 win got a mention in their acceptance speech.
