THOSE WERE THE DAYS

16th December 1986

Isthmian (AC Delco) League Cup; 3rd Round

Hampton 0 Chertsey Town 1 (Cawley 32’,) Att; 247

Hampton;-

Subs; Ricky Walkes, Sean O’Connell

Chertsey Town;-
Steve Aldham; Dave Pibwqorth, Gary Elcombe, Phil Ingram, Peter Cawley, Nicky Horton, W Powick, J Surey, Roland Gryzbek, Glen Eagle, Kevin Osnowski.
Subs; John Hamm, N O’Halleran.

Hampton, Division 1, were in a run of defeats, this loss to Division 2 side, Chertsey, was the third of five in the run-up to the New Year. Chertsey decided that attack was the best form of defence and the tactic seemed to knock Hampton out of their stride, not that they would have had much confidence anyway. It was no real surprise to the watching faithful when Chertsey took a deserved lead. Peter Cawley struck a twenty-yard free-kick, giving the visitors the lead. Hampton came out in the second half in a more positive frame of mind but as time wore on, desperation crept in. Hampton were reduced to punting long balls forward but to no avail. It was Chertsey who prevailed and went on to meet Hendon in the next round. All that Hampton had to show for the evening was £250 in the kitty as a losing club in the 3rd Round.

Yet another of those Hampton sides that contained some terrific individual players but which underachieved as a whole. You could say we had some excellent moments but there was a fair amount of frustration along the way!
