THOSE WERE THE DAYS
18th December 1971

Athenian League Division 2

Epsom & Ewell 0 Hampton 1 (Lindsay)

Hampton ;-
Ron Whiteaker; Alan Earl, Peter Minor, Ken Reed, Steve Markham, Ian Wenlock, Micky Roach, Peter Farren, Peter Allen, Hugh Lindsay, Jeff Sillett.
Sub; Chris Cole

Hampton completed a league double over Epsom & Ewell (3-0, at the end of October) with a competent performance against a struggling team. Attacking up the slope in the first half, Reed went close in the second minute with a header from a Lindsay cross. Shortly after, Roach and Farren linked up well, but the latter shot over from a good position. After a quiet spell Allen had a chance, just before half time, but shot straight at Gary Fowler. Early in the second half Lindsay was denied a goal by a goal line clearance. However, Lindsay was not to be denied for much longer. In the 63rd minute, a short Farren corner was crossed in by Roach, the ball was cleared to Reed who played the ball back into the danger area, Lindsay squeezing the ball between Fowler and the post. With a few minutes of the match left, Monk played the ball into Roach, however his powerful shot hit the post (Roach denied a goal before starting a period of suspension!).
