THOSE WERE THE DAYS
23rd April 1969

Spartan League

Hampton 2 (Allen, Myers) Addlestone 2

Hampton;-
Andy Wellsted; Alan Earl, Dave Johnson, Dave Richards, Graham Belcher, Arthur Rowlands, Peter Allen, Ken Merry, Peter Horne, Brian Mayers, Keith Wellham.

Addlestone;-
Brian Hames; Eddie Ratcliffe, Kenny Butler, Micky Chaplin, John O’Shea, Micky Cook, David Brant, Peter Garratt, Joe Spicer, Barry Carey, Eamon O’Riordan.

A match that built up to a climax but also went some way to ending Hampton’s championship challenge. Addlestone took the lead in the 16th minute with an excellent strike from Micky Chaplin. Wellsted punched the ball away from a left-wing corner, but the ball went to Chaplin, some twenty yards out, and he hit a shot that somehow went through a forest of red and white shirts. Wellsted kept Hampton in the game making a save from Peter Garrett. Hampton equalised in the 37th minute, Myers got on to the end of a cross from the left, his shot taking a slight deflection off John O’Shea. The second half was full of energy, but neither set of players could take advantage...until. With two minutes remaining (and with some supporters heading for the exit), Hampton grabbed what should have been a winning lead. Earl struck a free-kick from inside his own half, the flighted ball was headed into the net by Allen. Addlestone down and out? Certainly not. With seconds remaining, Hampton failed to clear the ball and David Brant managed to get just enough on the ball to level the score at 2-2.
