Hampton regularly had the luxury of friendlies with their neighbours, Brentford, with whom they had a good relationship - including having had Derek Bryan join the Bees the previous year. As usual there was a large following of Brentford supporters inside Beveree. The game was the first for Ron Noades, as Brentford’s manager, and he would have been pleased with Robert Taylor’s two goals in the first half, when the visitors dominated the home side. The second half saw the usual raft of changes by both sides but Brentford remained in control, Derek Bryan was involved in the third goal scored by Andy Scott. Darren Freeman scored the fourth, through a penalty, after Darren Powell had brought down Bryan.

A few days later Brentford announced that they had signed Powell from Hampton.
Powell would have a long career in League football playing for Brentford, Crystal Palace and Southampton, amongst others, before making a return to the Beavers in 2011/12 and eventually managing them, jointly, with Paul Barry.
