THOSE WERE THE DAYS

1st December 1984

Isthmian (Servowarm) League; Division 1

Hampton 4 (Marshall 27’ 87’, Dickenson 8’, Wilson 45’) Tilbury 1 (Dean 50’) Att; 76

Hampton;-
Chris Vagg; Robert Winterhalter, Malcolm Dickenson, Tim Hollands, Steven Smith, Richard Smith, Perry Tunesi, Mark Wilson (Steve Rogers, 74), Mick Heselden, Dwight Marshall, Robbie Walters.

Heselden returned to the club after a short spell at Bromley but it was Marshall who took the honours with a brace of goals, which, to be fair, could have been four or five, given the performance that he gave. A mid-table clash turned out to be one-way traffic. Walters went close early on, however, Hampton took the lead after just eight minutes. Dickenson powered through the defence and slotted the ball past Tilbury’s keeper Graham Dockrill. In the 27th minute, Heselden headed on a long drop-kick from Vagg to Marshall who held off a defender before scoring. Seconds before half-time Hampton scored their third, Wilson back-heading a Steve Smith free-kick in at the far post. Five minutes into the second half Tilbury finally got on to the scoresheet, Tony Dean, with a header. Marshall set up Walters for a shot on goal, but hit his attempt wide. Heselden, Tunesi and Marshall all had good chances to extend the lead. Eventually Marshall got his second when Walters provided him with the perfect cross. A shell-shocked Tilbury were probably left wondering how it was only a 4-1 drubbing.
