THOSE WERE THE DAYS
10th December 2005

Isthmian (Ryman) League; Premier Division

Maldon Town 1 (Howard, pen 65’) HRBFC 2 (Yaku 2’, Inns 6’) Att;140

HRBFC;-
Matt Lovett; Graham Harper, Tony Morley, Matt Elverson, Rob Paris, Dean Wells, Alan Inns, Elliott Godfrey (Barrie Matthews,69’), Lawrence Yaku (Ben Abbey, 85’), Marcello Fernandes, Kelvin McIntosh (Dudley Gardner,43’).
Unused Subs; Glenn Boosey, Jon Henry-Hayden.

In 991AD, just a few hundred yards from Maldon’s ground, a battle was fought between Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Three hefty Saxons kept the Viking hordes at bay but eventually Brithnoth, leader of the Saxons was killed, and the Vikings were victorious (1-0, to the away team). Fast forward over 1,000 years and the Beavers are making their first ever visit to Maldon Town.
Within six minutes it was virtually all over, as Hampton scored twice. After two minutes Fernandes raided down the right, a solitary defender allowed the ball to pass him where Yaku was waiting to pounce, nodding the ball in at the far post. In the sixth minute two defenders went for the same ball, result, Inns, saying thank you very much as he fired a left foot drive past David Macartney. Maldon were struggling to make any impression on the game, a shot on target was managed after 17 minutes but it only managed to strike Paris on his ‘backside’. Despite the cold weather the Maldon Manager kept his players out on the pitch during the half-time interval. In the 65th minute Maldon gained a fortunate penalty when the ball took an awkward bounce and struck Wells on the arm, Gary Howard scoring from the spot. Yaku had two good efforts to add to the score and then right at the end, Abbey had a shot turned away for a corner.

These were great days of watching Hampton. Dev was still just about perfecting his team and the best was still to come, but my goodness we were hard to beat.
