THOSE WERE THE DAYS
21st May 1968
Spartan League
Hampton 4 (Timberlake2, Aldridge, McLintock) Staines Town 2
Joe Andrews; Alan Earl, Brian Smith, Don Aldridge, Graham Belcher, Ken Merry, Syd Carter, John McLintock, Peter Allen, Dave Timberlake, Arthur Rowlands.
Three days after Hampton beat Staines 1-0 at Wheatsheaf Lane, the teams again at Beveree on a Tuesday evening. During the first half both teams had good chances to take the initiative, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring five minutes before the interval. P Bending reacted quickest when the ball eluded Earl and he nipped in to turn the ball past Andrews. Just on half time, Staines went two ahead, Bending and C Wheeler set up J Howarth to lob Andrews. Hampton had never beaten Staines in a league game at Beveree and at half time it seemed as far away as ever. In the 58th minute an Aldridge overhead kick came back off the bar for McLintock to prod home. Five minutes later it was 2-2, Aldridge scoring following a corner. Hampton then went 3-2 ahead, McLintock had a shot blocked but Timberlake followed up to make sure. Late in the game Timberlake hit a left foot shot from 25 yards which settled the game in Hampton’s favour.
Despite their best endeavours Hampton would miss out on the championship by a single point (their 2-2 draw at Molesey two days later, handing the title to Tring Town).

Les, you have got Micky German as scoring but in the comments he is not one of the scorers. I may be wrong but Garman never scored for Hampton. Although I was only seven at the time, I remember him as a skilful ball player. Not sure what his career was pre and post Hampton. Maybe be Shep or others will know.

Micky Garman never scored a goal for Hampton, it is quite remarkable that given the number of games he played and the number of goals we scored that he never got on the goalscorer list.
As for his history, think he came on loan from Wealdstone originally, he was a hard working midfielder.

Interesting how late into May the games went on.at that time.
McLintock was definitely the scorer, not Garman. My results sheet for 67/68 had Garman down as one of the scorers, which is where that came from (now amended). Obviously didn't notice the discrepancy when I did a precis of the report from the Middx Chronicle. Good spot Tony!
